Claudia Paz is a Peruvian lighting designer with several international awards, recognized for her work in dynamic lighting.

“Natural Light as a Design Element in Architecture” – a joint conference by architects Cecilia Guadarrama and Miriam García, faculty members in the specialization of architectural lighting design at UNAM.

Claudia Paz

With a degree in Architecture, Claudia decided to focus her career on lighting design. In 1995, she began working at Targetti, an Italian lighting products company, where she learned and worked directly with the firm’s professionals.

She has attended numerous conferences, where her knowledge and experience have grown.

She was hired by ENDESA for the lighting project of 32 monuments in Peru.

In 2009, she founded her own studio, which is internationally recognized and has received international awards for her passion for light and her constant pursuit of new creative ways to use it.

She is frequently invited to various countries to give lectures on her work, including at MIT Media Lab, KTH in Stockholm, Enlighten Europe, Enlighten Americas, and LED Forum in Brazil.

Her studio has projects in Peru as well as in Bolivia, Colombia, the USA, and Singapore.

Thomas Paterson
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17th 12:00 – 1:00 PM. Grand Auditorium

With a degree in Engineering from UNSW, Sydney, AU, Thomas Paterson is the director of Lux Populi. He began his professional career as a lighting designer for the theater and entertainment industry before studying Mechatronic Engineering at the University of New South Wales.

With this background in creative lighting design and engineering, he worked for Barry Webb and Associates (now Webb Australia Group), where he gained experience on diverse projects such as listed heritage cathedrals, public infrastructure, sports facilities, and restaurants.

Thomas has managed numerous projects, ranging from restaurants to museums, office towers, galleries, and exhibitions. Key projects include seven commercial projects in Canary Wharf, the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar, Mr. Chow in Seoul, and The Standard in Miami.

He is a contributing member of IALD and co-author of the ANSI/ESTA 1.15 standard for the assembly and fabrication of mast base structures.

Thomas Schneider

Thomas Schneider is an architect and managing partner at Kovac Design Studio in Los Angeles, California. He has worked on projects of various scales, including high-profile commercial, adaptive reuse, and residential projects.

Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, and educated in Canada, Germany, and Los Angeles, Thomas brings an international perspective to everything he designs and builds.

Throughout his 25-year career, his projects have been featured in prominent publications such as Elle Decor, Architectural Digest, and Wallpaper*, and have received numerous design awards.

He is a problem solver who values and is enriched by the relationships formed throughout the life of each project, from conception to completion.

Thomas has taught and lectured at his alma mater, SCI-Arc, and is actively involved in community and nonprofit organizations in Los Angeles, along with his wife Aliza and their twins.

Cecilia Guadarrama
Natural Light as a Design Element in Architecture

Doctorate from UNAM, Cecilia Guadarrama is a tenured professor in the Graduate Division of the Faculty of Architecture at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Her research focuses on natural light in the built environment.

In her academic role, she developed the curriculum for the specialization in “Architectural Lighting Design,” of which she is currently the academic head. She also established the “Natural Light Observation Platform” and the “Architectural Lighting Laboratory.”

She teaches courses at the undergraduate, specialization, and master’s levels, and supervises final projects in the Unique Program of Specializations in Architecture and theses in the Master’s and Doctoral Programs in Architecture. Her research focuses on the use of natural light in architecture and the implications of artificial light in space. She is a national and international speaker on topics related to lighting in architecture and has undertaken lighting design projects and consulting related to lighting design.

Miriam García Alcántara
Natural Light as a Design Element in Architecture
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 17th 1:10 – 2:00 PM. Grand Auditorium

Doctor of Science in Architecture and Urbanism from the Escuela Superior de Ingeniería y Arquitectura at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional, with research on “The Aesthetics of Natural Light in Colonial Baroque Religious Architecture.” She holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, where she received the Alfonso Caso Medal for her thesis, “Natural Light.”

System for Collection, Transmission, and Distribution. A consultant on natural lighting for architectural projects, she has collaborated with firms such as Calantigua and Ideas en Luz, advising on solar radiation and lighting for projects including the Mayan Train station, airport, and office spaces. She teaches the course “Light and Health” in the Specialization in Architectural Lighting Design at UNAM and is a tenured professor for the Lighting Project Workshop in the Master’s in Interior Design program at Universidad Anáhuac.

She also teaches Lighting, Preliminary Design Workshop, and Schematic Design courses at the undergraduate level at Universidad La Salle. She is a speaker at the Master’s in Lighting Design program at Arquine. Her professional experience includes working with Avant Group, a firm dedicated to lighting project development, and Buró Verde, specializing in landscape architecture projects.
