Light, shadow and material shape the experience of the spaces we inhabit. A reflection on how lighting changes our perception and experience of space, from interiors to the city, as well as on the specific value of lighting design, the essential collaboration between lighting and other disciplines, and its cultural, emotional and biological dimensions.

A journey through lighting projects where collaboration among architects, designers, engineers, exhibition designers and specialists reveals how multidisciplinary dialogue transforms ideas into experiences of light.
His work explores the relationship between natural and artificial light in space, understanding lighting as a medium capable of shaping not only the physical environment, but also habits and the ways in which human relationships with their surroundings are perceived and valued. His approach begins by observing light as a material that gives form both to the environment and to the everyday rituals that take place within it.
Educated at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam and holding a Master’s Degree in Lighting Design & LED Technology from Politecnico di Milano, Luca combines professional practice with research and teaching. Through projects, experiments and design processes, he explores how light can reveal materials, spatial relationships and, especially, the passage of time. For Luca, designing also means visually editing the spaces we inhabit by enhancing what already exists: discovering what is already present and using the qualities of light to make it meaningful and perceptible.
His practice therefore seeks to question the conventional role of lighting in order to propose an architecture of light that is more sensitive, experimental and closely connected to human experience.
Architect graduated with honors from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in 1996, with a Master of Science in Real Estate Development from Columbia University, New York, completed in 1998.
In 1996, he founded JSa Architecture Studio, a key practice in the renewal of Mexico City whose work has focused on urban acupuncture projects and the recovery of architectural heritage. Since then, and over the past three decades, the studio’s practice has expanded to an international scale.
He has received more than 130 national and international awards, including the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale (2006), First International Prize at the Pan-American Architecture Biennale of Quito (2012), the Gold Medal of the Mexican National Architecture Biennale (2020), and the American Institute of Architects Housing Award (2022).
In 2008, he was elected an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2009, he joined Mexico’s National System of Art Creators, part of the System of Support for Cultural Creation and Projects. In 2014, he was invited to hold the Federico E. Mariscal Extraordinary Chair at the UNAM School of Architecture.
He has been a member of Mexico’s National Academy of Architecture since 2011, and in 2023 he was named Emeritus Academician by the same institution in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of architecture.
Rafael Gallego Vargas has been a lighting designer since 1998 and is the director of AUREOLIGHTING, an independent studio founded in 2007 and specializing in architectural, urban and monumental lighting, as well as temporary installations. He studied Industrial Design at Escola Massana in Barcelona and completed a Master’s Degree in Product Development at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya. After working in industrial and luminaire design, he went on to devote his career fully to lighting.
His work spans interior spaces, architecture, heritage, urban landscapes and commissioned light art. He co-directs UMBRA Light Festival in Vitoria-Gasteiz and lectures internationally.
He is a member of the Spanish Lighting Committee and a co-founder of the Professional Association of Lighting Designers of Spain, which he chaired from 2015 to 2019. He has also served on the European Steering Committee of the International Association of Lighting Designers and collaborates with Slowlight.
He has been Co-Director of the Master’s Degree in Lighting Design at IED Madrid and Program Director at Universidad Europea. His projects have received recognition from the IALD, the Illuminating Engineering Society, City.People.Light and the Ibero-American Lighting Design Biennial, among others.
His approach brings together technique, perception, identity and emotion, with particular attention to the biological dimension of light: its influence on circadian rhythms, well-being, and our relationship with the natural cycles of light and darkness.
Self-taught lighting designer with 40 years of experience. He began his career in 1986 working in theaters in Paris, and in 1989 started developing architectural lighting projects in the city. In 1993, he founded his independent studio, Limarí Lighting Design. Since 1996, he has been based in Chile, where he leads a team of architects and designers specializing in architectural, urban, museum and temporary lighting projects.
From 2011 to 2018, he taught in the Architectural Lighting diploma program at the Faculty of Design of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
He has delivered numerous lectures and workshops both nationally and internationally.
He was the creator and Executive Director of the Ibero-American Lighting Design Encounter, EILD 2010 Valparaíso, and later participated in the executive committees of EILD in Querétaro in 2012, Medellín in 2014, Ouro Preto in 2016, and Colonia in 2019.
He is currently a member of API, the Chilean Association of Lighting Professionals, where he participates in the standards committee and in the organization of the 2027 Latin American Lighting Project Awards, Douglas Leonard Covarrubias Edition.
He has received more than 50 international lighting design awards.
